Before entering mass production, you need to test each function of the cylinder head. However, the cylinder head has a complex design and requires tight-tolerance manufacturing processes. As a result, the mold should preferably be finished with CNC machining. Aside from tight tolerance, quality is very important for improved vehicle performance and cost-efficiency. Below are the common machining processes.
Precision Milling
Milling cylinder heads is a very common process that involves cutting a workpiece using a CNC milling machine to remove materials and form the cylinder head components such as the slots, holes, pockets, and contours. Aside from manufacturing, it is employable in precision cylinder head machining to reduce the combustion chamber volume or build a higher compression.
Note: CNC milling cylinder heads are best for working on an already-machined workpiece.
Drilling
Drilling is another process that involves using a rotating cutting tool, also called a drill, fixed with a drill bit to make a round hole in a workpiece. In cylinder head machining, CNC drilling is suitable for making holes and channels for the passage of coolant, oil, gas, etc.
While machining the cylinder head, place the drill perpendicular to the workpiece to minimize drifting. Also, certain workpieces need angular drilling, and you might need a special work-holding tool to perform angular drilling operations.

CNC Turning is a CNC technique that involves holding and rotating the workpiece and feeding the tool to the workpiece to create the shape. How to DIY and Replace of Cylinder Head
Replacing a cylinder head is a complicated task that requires expert mechanical skills. Below are the general steps and guidelines for replacing a cylinder head.
Preparation
Have a clean working space and gather all the necessary tools for the job. These include torque wrenches, sockets, ratchets, head bolt torque angles, and gasket scrapers. The new cylinder head and a repair manual for guidance.
Disconnecting components
Start by disconnecting all components connected to the cylinder head. This includes the intake and exhaust systems, ignition coils, electrical connections, coolant hoses, and, in some cases, the timing belt or chain. After that, drain the coolant and oil.
Removing the cylinder head
Loosen the head bolts gradually and systematically as instructed by the repair manual. This relieves stress on the head without damaging it. After that, lift the cylinder head using a suitable engine hoist or a head puller.

Preparing the engine block
Clean the engine block surface and inspect it for any damages. Ensure it is smooth and clean before installing the new head. Also, ensure that the new cylinder head is compatible with the engine.
Installing the new cylinder head
Position the new head on the engine block and align it with the dowels and head bolt holes. Install a new head gasket and ensure it is properly aligned. Then, install the head bolts and tighten them in a gradual and crisscross pattern as per the torque specifications in the repair manual.
Reconnecting components
Reconnect all components that were disconnected earlier. Follow the reverse order of disassembly. Reinstall the intake and exhaust manifolds, ignition coils, electrical connections, timing belt or chain, cooling hoses, and engine accessories.
Final steps
Refill the engine with oil and cooling as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks or unusual noises and make the necessary adjustments.
