Components of A Cylinder Head

The Head gasket is in between the cylinder head and the engine block, where it acts as a seal. As a result, it prevents the leakage and mixing of oil and engine coolant;
Intake ports function in air circulation into the combustion chamber and cylinder head;
The exhaust port removes exhaust gases from the combustion chamber, reducing internal pressure that can cause an explosion;
Spark plugs provide the power to kickstart the combustion process;
The Head camshaft is responsible for closing and opening the valves;
Additional cylinder head parts functions in the circulation of coolants and lubricant into the engine.

Custom Cylinder Head Machining Processes

Before entering mass production, you need to test each function of the cylinder head. However, the cylinder head has a complex design and requires tight-tolerance manufacturing processes. As a result, the mold should preferably be finished with CNC machining. Aside from tight tolerance, quality is very important for improved vehicle performance and cost-efficiency. Below are the common machining processes.

Precision Milling
Milling cylinder heads is a very common process that involves cutting a workpiece using a CNC milling machine to remove materials and form the cylinder head components such as the slots, holes, pockets, and contours. Aside from manufacturing, it is employable in precision cylinder head machining to reduce the combustion chamber volume or build a higher compression.
Note: CNC milling cylinder heads are best for working on an already-machined workpiece.

Drilling
Drilling is another process that involves using a rotating cutting tool, also called a drill, fixed with a drill bit to make a round hole in a workpiece. In cylinder head machining, CNC drilling is suitable for making holes and channels for the passage of coolant, oil, gas, etc.

While machining the cylinder head, place the drill perpendicular to the workpiece to minimize drifting. Also, certain workpieces need angular drilling, and you might need a special work-holding tool to perform angular drilling operations.

Precision Turning
CNC Turning is a CNC technique that involves holding and rotating the workpiece and feeding the tool to the workpiece to create the shape. It is a suitable technique for making components such as ports. Aside from that, it is suitable for refining the cylinder head after techniques such as long foam casting.

Aluminium Cylinder Heads Application

Aluminium cylinder heads are used in all sorts of engine types and vehicles. This includes high-performance racing cars, trucks, city vehicles, motorcycles, and more.

High-Performance Cylinder Heads
High-performance aluminum cylinder heads are lightweight but strong enough to raise horsepower. Aluminum heads dissipate heat faster, improving the durability of your engine. Also, it will draw in a dense, cooler air-fuel mixture to the combustion chamber, which increases power output.

Wide Selection of Alloys
Many businesses in the automotive industry choose aluminum cylinder heads due to the material's high strength-to-weight ratio. HM manufactures aluminum cylinder heads using different aluminum alloys to suit your application:
Acd12
A380
ZLD104
Al 6061
Al 6082
Al 6063
Al 075

You can customize the design, and specify what vehicle you want the cylinder heads for. Any car brand, model, type—we've got you covered.

Polished Aluminum Cylinder Heads
We offer a wide range of surface treatments for any part. Polished aluminum cylinder heads are common due to their simplicity, aesthetic, and cost-efficient process.
You can also request aluminum anodizing, sandblasting, chrome plating, zinc plating, powder coating, painting any color, and laser engraving.

How to DIY and Replace of Cylinder Head

Replacing a cylinder head is a complicated task that requires expert mechanical skills. Below are the general steps and guidelines for replacing a cylinder head.

Preparation
Have a clean working space and gather all the necessary tools for the job. These include torque wrenches, sockets, ratchets, head bolt torque angles, and gasket scrapers. The new cylinder head and a repair manual for guidance.

Disconnecting components
Start by disconnecting all components connected to the cylinder head. This includes the intake and exhaust systems, ignition coils, electrical connections, coolant hoses, and, in some cases, the timing belt or chain. After that, drain the coolant and oil.

Removing the cylinder head
Loosen the head bolts gradually and systematically as instructed by the repair manual. This relieves stress on the head without damaging it. After that, lift the cylinder head using a suitable engine hoist or a head puller.

Preparing the engine block

Clean the engine block surface and inspect it for any damages. Ensure it is smooth and clean before installing the new head. Also, ensure that the new cylinder head is compatible with the engine.

Installing the new cylinder head

Position the new head on the engine block and align it with the dowels and head bolt holes. Install a new head gasket and ensure it is properly aligned. Then, install the head bolts and tighten them in a gradual and crisscross pattern as per the torque specifications in the repair manual.

Reconnecting components

Reconnect all components that were disconnected earlier. Follow the reverse order of disassembly. Reinstall the intake and exhaust manifolds, ignition coils, electrical connections, timing belt or chain, cooling hoses, and engine accessories.

Final steps

Refill the engine with oil and cooling as per the manufacturer's recommendations. Start the engine and let it run for a few minutes. Check for any leaks or unusual noises and make the necessary adjustments.

FAQ

Q: What Do Cylinder Heads Do?

A: A cylinder head is essentially a housing made of aluminum or cast iron, that sits atop the engine block. In addition to shielding the engine parts underneath from harm, it also both helps to manage the stream of air, fuel, and coolant into the engine and eliminate exhaust gases. That's true of all internal combustion engines, whether you drive a Toyota, Jeep, or Mazda, by the way.

Q: Why is the cylinder head important in an engine?

A: The cylinder head is important in an engine because it contains vital components like valves and spark plugs that control air and fuel flow and combustion. It helps seal the cylinders for efficient combustion and power generation.

Q: What is the difference between a cylinder head for petrol and diesel engines?

A: Cylinder heads for petrol and diesel engines differ mainly in design and combustion methods. Diesel engine cylinder heads are designed for higher compression ratios and have features like swirl chambers to promote fuel-air mixing. In contrast, petrol engine cylinder heads have a simpler design due to lower compression ratios.

Q: Will new cylinder heads increase horsepower?

A: Needless to say, tTsize of the combustion chamber affects so much of an engine's operation, you have to choose the appropriate selection, not just the one with the best peak numbers.

Q: Is it better to replace cylinder head or engine?

A: Damaged Cylinder Head
A cylinder head with tunneling may be repairable, but more often it is not. And a warped cylinder has a chance of the mechanic being able to repair it if is not too severely warped. In short form, a damaged cylinder head will require a new engine.

Q: How Do I Spot a Faulty Cylinder Head?

A: Signs of trouble include:
Excessive exhaust smoke
Engine misfires
Cracked cylinder head
Coolant leaks
Reduced engine performance
The engine oil looks milky

Q: How Much Does It Cost to Replace a Cylinder Head?

A: Parts can run you between $2,400 and $2,500 on average, while labor can add anywhere from $,1200 and $1,500 to your total bill. Of course, those numbers can be affected by your location, your vehicle's make and model, and if any accompanying repairs are required.

Q: What are the most common materials used in manufacturing cylinder heads?

A: The Engine Cylinder Head Factory is a standout piece in our Cylinder Head collection.Cylinder heads are commonly manufactured using aluminum, cast iron, or alloy steel. These materials offer a balance of durability, heat resistance, and performance. A reputable auto parts manufacturer can assist in selecting the right material for your specific requirements.
