Function Of An Oil Pan

Types of Oil Sump Pans Available
Wet sump
In a wet sump system, the aluminum oil pan sump stores oil at the bottom. When the engine runs, a pump sends the oil to the top of the engine. After that, the oil flows back into the pan, creating a ''wet'' condition. The aluminum oil pan sump is the most common and inexpensive.
Oil pan with baffle
The baffle is a partition inside the aluminum oil pan sump that reduces the movement of the oil surface in the pan. It prevents the splashing of oil due to the fast movement of pistons in the engine.
Dry sump
As the name suggests, a dry sump does not keep oil inside the aluminum oil pan sump. Instead, it stores the oil in two to three large tanks located away from the engine. The oil is constantly circulated through the engine by a dual or triple pump.
