The steps of CNC milling

Dec 21, 2022

CNC milling is a computer-controlled manufacturing process, using a cutting tool to shape the workpiece into a custom-designed part or product.

This process is suitable for machining high precision custom-designed parts and products with a wide range of materials, such as metal, plastic and wood.

CNC milling machines can have 3 or more axes of independent motion to make more complex shapes.

The steps of CNC milling:

Creating and exporting a 3D CAD model (technical drawing) for machining

The drawing must be in a compatible CNC machining file format, otherwise the CNC milling machine can't understand.

The formats are STEP or STP or IGS.

Programming and Setting up the CNC milling machine

Converting the model (drawing) into a CNC machine program which dictates the actions of the machine and the movements of the tooling across the workpiece.

Executing the milling operation

When the machine is ready, the operator launches the program to execute the milling operation.

In general, milling process is used to shape a workpiece of material from start to finish. For more complex parts, multiple machine setups may be required to complete the fabrication process.

Haoze Technology is an expert in CNC milling, we have more than 40 milling machines in our plant including 3 axis, 4 axis and 5 axis.
