Metal material types of custom mechanical parts
The most commonly used raw materials in the manufacture of mechanical parts are steel and cast iron, followed by rare metal alloys, and non-metallic materials such as plastics and rubber are also widely used in mechanical equipment manufacturing.

1- Metal material

The metal materials of mechanical parts mainly refer to cast iron and steel, which are all iron-carbon alloys. Their difference mainly depends on the carbon content. Iron-carbon alloys with a carbon content of less than 2% are called steel, and those with a carbon content of more than 2% are called cast iron.

1-1 cast iron:

Common cast irons include gray cast iron, nodular cast iron, malleable cast iron, and alloy cast iron. Among them, gray cast iron and nodular cast iron are ductile materials, which cannot be rolled and forged, and are not easy to be welded, but they have moderate fusibility and good liquid circulation, so they can be built into mechanical parts with relatively complex shapes. . Gray cast iron has high tensile strength, good wear resistance and shock absorption, low sensitivity to stress, and low price, but its compressive strength is inferior to steel. Gray cast iron is often used as a sound card rack or shell seat. Ductile iron has higher compressive strength than gray cast iron and has certain plasticity. Ductile iron can replace steel castings and forged steel for the production of engine crankshafts, engine camshafts, oil pump gears, oil circuit boards, etc.

1-2 Steel:

Steel has high strength and good plasticity. It can process various mechanical parts through rolling forging, stamping, welding and casting, and can use heat treatment and surface treatment to improve physical properties. Therefore, It is widely used There are many types of steel. According to the main use, steel can be divided into alloy structural steel, alloy steel and special purpose steel. Alloy structural steel can be used in the production and processing of mechanical parts and various engineering structures. Alloy steel can be used to manufacture various CNC blades, mold shells and so on. Special purpose steel (stainless steel, wear-resistant steel, corrosion-resistant steel) is mainly used in special environmental conditions. According to composition, steel can be divided into carbon steel and alloy steel.

The key to the characteristics of carbon steel lies in the carbon content. The more carbon content, the higher the compressive strength, but the lower the plasticity. Carbon steel includes general carbon steel and high-quality carbon steel. General carbon steel (such as Q215, 0235) only guarantees the impact toughness but not the composition, and is not suitable for heat treatment process and is usually used in less critical mechanical parts and mechanical systems. The key to the properties of carbon steel is its carbon content. The carbon content of high-carbon steel is less than 0.25%, its yield limit and strength limit are low, its plasticity is very high, and its forgeability is good. It is usually used to make screws, nuts, sealing rings and weldments. High-carbon steel parts with a carbon content of 0.1%-0.2% can be hardened by carburizing and quenching to make the surface hard and the core tough. It is generally used to manufacture transmission gears, sprocket chains and other parts that require surface wear resistance and impact resistance. .

The carbon content of low-carbon steel is between 0.3% and 0.5%, and its comprehensive physical properties are good, so it can be used to produce mechanical parts such as bolts, nut keys, gears and shafts with relatively large load. Medium-carbon steel with a carbon content of 0.55%-0.7% has high strength and rigidity, and is usually used to make ordinary torsion springs, coil springs and galvanized steel wire ropes. Alloy structural steel is made by adding some alloying elements to carbon steel. Each alloying element is less than 2% or the total yield of alloying elements is less than 5% is called low alloy steel. The content of each alloy element is 2% to 5% or the total content of alloy elements is 5% to 10%, which is called medium alloy steel. High-alloy steels contain more than 5% of each alloying element or more than 10% of the total alloying element.

Adding different alloying elements can change the steel's properties and give it a variety of unique properties. For example, chromium can increase the hardness of steel, and it can prevent rust and acid at high temperature; nickel makes steel have better cutting performance and wear resistance. However, alloy steel parts generally need quenching and tempering treatment to improve their physical properties. In addition, alloy steel is more expensive than carbon steel and is more sensitive to stress. Therefore, castings made of carbon steel and alloy steel should only be considered when carbon steel is difficult to do the job. It is called steel castings, and it is usually used to produce mechanical parts with complicated structures and large volumes. However, the liquid circulation of steel castings is worse than that of cast iron, and its shrinkage rate is also larger than that of cast iron. The wall thickness is often more than 10mm, and the arc and the connection part with different wall thickness should be larger than the cast iron parts.
