How are plastic injection molded medical parts made?
The first step in custom plastic injection molding medical parts is to create a mold. The mold for the part to be manufactured is designed according to some injection molding guidelines, using computer-aided design, to the specifications of the 3D model of the part. It is then manufactured in two parts, usually by CNC machining.

Separate halves of the mold are placed and held tightly by the clamping device of the injection molding machine. In the form of granules or pellets, raw materials are placed in barrels where they are heated at high temperature and high pressure until they melt. The molten material is immediately injected into the mold cavity, filling the entire space within the mold. It is then cooled and solidified to form the shape of the mold.

After the material has completely cooled and solidified, the mold is opened by the clamping device and the solidified finished product is taken out. The finished part undergoes several post-processing operations. These operations include removal of excess material and supporting structures, surface preparation, and painting, electroplating and heat treatment as required.
